Synth guy, sound designer, Brisbane, Australia.
Hi, I'm James (some call me Cactus James) I have been playing around with synths for 35+ years, I play by ear and have not had any musical training. In the last 10 years I have had the chance to work with numerous bands creating and arranging their sounds and backings for live performances. In my channel I re-create some of my favourite tracks and where possible use hardware and the same gear as on the originals.

SNAP! Rhythm is a Dancer - Performed on Korg T2 & Yamaha DX100 Synths
Having a little break in the studio this afternoon to do a quick throwback to the 90s with a short cover of Rhythm is a Dancer by SNAP!
Recognizable in the original track are a few sounds from the Korg M1 including the Choir and Strings patches. I believe the bass sound in the original was from one of their FM modules layered with an Oberheim Xpander.
In this video I used my Korg T2 to cover the M1 sounds and a Yamaha DX100 on the bass (modified Solid Bass preset).
Thank you Naia Neith for throwing in your amazing vocals over the top!

Queen - Radio Gaga Cover/Tribute/Remake (instrumental) - Roland System 8 & Fantom 06
Переглядів 908Місяць тому
Hearing Radio Gaga was one of the songs responsible for sparking my love affair with synths. I was a young boy at the time and heard it through my parents hifi system on vinyl, it absolutely blew me away. I also love how John Deacon's bass lines dance around the synth bass. Now, 40 years later I have had a crack at recreating this classic track. The original featured a Roland Jupiter 8, VP-330 ...
Next Video Teaser - Radio Gaga by Queen - On Roland Synths

This is a quick preview of the next song I will be releasing a cover/re-construction of. I may also follow up with a tutorial video on the sound design and how I put it all together. When I first heard Radio Gaga by Queen I was a small boy, listening to it on vinyl through my parents hifi system. I was blown away by the synth sounds, it was so powerful and left a lasting impression that sparked...
Roland SH09 Sound Demo - Analogue Synth
Переглядів 4083 місяці тому
The Roland SH09 is a monophonic synth released in 1979 and is the little cousin of the SH2 and more famous SH101. The synth has only 1 VCO but has a sub oscillator that can be mixed in to give your sounds more beef in the low end. The filter can self-oscillate lending itself to the creation of cool theremin type sounds or deep kick drums and lazer zaps. The SH09 was used extensively by the Eury...
Richard Marx Hazard - Re-make on Korg T2 Synth & Boss DR660 Drum Machine

The Korg T series synths are described as the M1 on steroids with double the amount of ROM and waveforms. They came in 3 sizes, T3 with 61 keys, T2 with 76 keys and the monster T1 with 88 keys. I love the sound of my Korg T2 and prefer some sounds on this 35 year old board over my modern Roland Fantom. When I got my T2 I recognised the sounds from a famous 1992 hit instantly... Hazard was a big...
Korg T2 Sounds - T Series T1/T2/T3 - Korg M1 on steroids

The Korg T Series (T1 T2 & T3) came out in 1989 and built on the success of the popular Korg M1. Featuring double the amount of internal ROM and waveforms, these boards had all the original M1 sounds plus more! Often referred to as the M1 on steroids, they are well worth getting if you find one on the second had market as the sounds are high quality and better than the software version. I hear ...

The Yamaha DX100 Synthesizer from the 80's is dirty, gritty and a pretty cool piece of gear. This synth was used primarily for its bass sounds and was all over techno and house records of the late 80's and early 90's. In this video use the Jazz Organ (modified) preset and Solid Bass preset to recreate Gypsy by Crystal Waters. The DX100 does a good job at the organ patch which was originally don...
Only You by Yazoo on Roland Jupiter 6

I created this track when I was selling my Roland Jupiter 6. All the sounds come from the JP6 (apart from kick and snare drum). The original was recorded by Vince Clarke using a SCI Pro-One, I think the Jupiter 6 gets close though. #analoguesynth #vintagesynth #roland #rolandsynth #synthesizer #synths #synthesiser #synthesis #vintagesynth

Love them or hate them Stock Aitken & Waterman are considered to be one of the most successful songwriting and production partnerships of all time. Their music dominated the UK charts in the mid to late 80's with their Hi-NRG dance pop. SAW had one of the most technologically advanced studios in the world at the time and as a teenager in the 80's I loved their sound. Stock Aitken Waterman track...
RARE - Nik Kershaw DEMO - Georgia
Переглядів 2 тис.12 років тому
I was cleaning out an old computer and come across a bunch of Nik Kershaw stuff so thought I would share some of it. The sound quality is pretty bad as this was originally in a format that preceeded the mp3 file format and is distorted in some places, nothing I can do about it unfortunately. This one is Nik's demo of a song called Georgia. Nik recorded demo versions of all the songs from his de...

Pseudo Echo - Listening - Cover with Roland Jupiter 6
Переглядів 6 тис.12 років тому
Pseudo Echo are an 80's New Wave band from Melbourne Australia and are probably best known for their cover of Funky Town (originall by Lipps Inc.) Listening was released in 1983 as their debut single. I think they used a Roland Jupiter 8 / MKS-80 on the original with an Oberheim OB8 for the bass (confirmed) and lots of Simmons drums. For my cover I used a Roland Jupiter 6 with various linn and ...

Beautiful cover of a great song!
👍👍👍
Jamming on the knobs in the interlude, now that's a true artist.
Awesome!!!
Just found you, can't wait to hear this!!!
SUPERB! That arpeggio is spot on!
Cheers @LFOVCF
This is excellent!
Thanks mate 🙏🎹
Wow very good idea your tutorial of sound design ! excellent work as usual
Thanks @francks7550 🙏
Indistinguishable from the original. One of my guilty pleasure songs.
Nice work!
Fantastic as always!
cheers @synthof
Damn.... Very well done! You Nailed the Arp bass sound!! Excellent work! ❤
Thanks @kerzwhile
Keep uploading. You have alot of presets in that room. Make something happen
Looking forward to this one. Sounds great!
Great piece of work! I’m pretty certain Dave Stewart used the Roland Juno 60 certainly for the arpeggio part.
He sure did 👍 I used my System 8 in J60 mode to cover this part for the cover.
@@kryptonenz I was waiting for Annie to start singing in this… when you listen to this you realise how long it must have taken Dave and Annie to produce - quite a lot of intricacies!
With my headphones, I listened again to the Richard Marx studio version, this cover is more dynamic sounding. I guess you made up for the lack of vocals. Excellent!
Well you nailed that one! I was waiting for Annie's voice ha!
Nice cover.
wonderful!
Well Done ✅ Love That Beat ❤
Wow! So well done! Great job! One of my favorite Eurythmics songs too! Such a hauntingly beautiful, ominous and theatrical piece!
Awesome!!!!
Brilliant.
One of the best 80's song ever ! I remember to this day how I was listening often as child this song in car of my dad from old audio cassette. Thanks for reminding me of old childhood memories. Great cover Man ! I have one question to You - how did you recreate pizzicato strings sound ? It's very close sound to this from original song - I loved it !
Yes one my favs from the 80s too and maybe my fav Eurythmics track, I love the mood of this song. The pizzi sound in my version came from a Roland Fantom 06 playing octaves
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Beau travail! Merci.
You're the best !!
Awesome work !
Great work! 😀👍
Nice work 👏🏼
😆 Promo'SM
Unfreakin real!!❤❤❤❤ What? Synths did you use again?
thanks @Goondoon1972 For this I used SH09, Fantom 06, System 8
Sounds great
Absolutely perfect!!! Well done sir!!!
I loved my T3!
Nice to see you back again. One of my favourite songs of 1991 and indeed the entire 90s.
Very Nice!
It was a shame Richard Marx got into it with Adam Curry. Seemed like he left the industry after that.
Brilliant !
Great cover! Anyone ever notice how much it’s like George Michael’s “Hand to Mouth” from the Faith album (1987)?
This was great. Love that song, thanks for posting.
I read somewere that this song was made on a Yamaha Sy77
Yeah I saw that comment too, I think that was someone's guess. I can assure you that it was the T2. If you look at any live videos of Marx in the early 90s when he performed, it was with a Korg T2.
